Medea

1969 - Drama

Restored by the Cineteca di Bologna Foundation in collaboration with Minerva Pictures at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory and presented at the Rome Film Festival as part of the tribute to Maria Callas.

The restoration allows audiences to hear Maria Callas dubbing the character of Medea for the first time.

Young Jason sets out for the remote Colchis to seize the Golden Fleece, a golden goat’s skin believed to bring power and fertility, which he needs to reclaim the throne usurped by his uncle Pelias. The sorceress Medea, daughter of the sovereign of Colchis, smitten by Jason’s physical prowess, helps him steal the precious relic and flees with him. Upon returning home, Jason marries Medea and has three children, but consumed by ambition, he abandons his family to marry Glauce, the young daughter of the king of Corinth. Driven mad by jealousy, Medea enacts a terrible revenge.
