Les Carabiniers

Based on the theatrical comedy “I carabinieri” by Beniamino Joppolo (originally called “I soldati conquistatori”), Les Carabiniers was born from an idea of Roberto Rossellini who proposed a double direction: Rossellini himself for the staging at the “Festival dei Due Mondi” in Spoleto, and Godard for the big screen. The protagonists of the story are the brothers Michel-Ange and Ulysse, two foolish and cruel peasants who are enlisted in the army with the promise of being able to commit all kinds of abuse and keep for them the loot. The two participate in various campaigns around the world, between theft and injustice, but when they come back home after two years, they realize that the situation is very different from what they imagined…
