21 March 2024

I cento passi (2000), by Marco Tullio Giordana, airs today on Rai Movie to celebrate the Day of Remembrance and Commitment in memory of the innocent victims of the mafia.

I cento passi tells the life and death of Peppino Impastato, masterfully portrayed by newcomer Luigi Lo Cascio. An activist committed to fighting Cosa Nostra in Cinisi, in the province of Palermo, where he was brutally murdered on May 9, 1978. The cast also includes Luigi Maria Burruano, Tony Sperandeo, Claudio Gioè, Ninni Bruschetta, and Lucia Sardo. The title of the film refers to the distance, precisely one hundred steps, that separated Impastato’s house from that of the boss Gaetano Badalamenti, the mastermind behind the murder.

A central work in the filmography of civic engagement, I cento passi has received numerous accolades. At the Venice Film Festival, it won the award for Best Screenplay. It also secured five David di Donatello awards and a Silver Ribbon. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Foreign Film.

I cento passi is available in a restored 4k version on Minerva Classic, the channel of The Film Club and Prime Video.
